Methods For Refining Manganese Metal

Methods for refining manganese metal
Manganese is a silvery white metal with a hard and brittle texture, but it is easy to oxidize in the air, forming a brown oxide coating layer. It is also easy to be oxidized when heated, forming a layered oxide scale. Manganese is one of the essential trace elements for human beings and plays an important role in human health. As an important industrial raw material, manganese is widely used in iron and steel, nonferrous metallurgy, chemical industry, electronics, batteries, agriculture, medicine, and other fields.
Methods for extracting manganese
There are two main methods of refining manganese metal: thermal method (fire method) and electrolytic method (wet method). The purity of metal manganese produced by thermal method is not more than 95 to 98%, and it consumes high energy, causing serious pollution, which has gradually been eliminated. However, the purity of metal manganese produced by electrolytic method can reach 99.7 to 99.9% or more, and the pollution is relatively small. Now, it has become the main method of metal manganese production.
The appearance of manganese produced by electrolytic method is like iron, in an irregular sheet shape, with a hard and brittle texture, bright on one side, and rough on the other side, which is silver white to brown. After being processed into powder, it appears silver gray; It is easy to oxidize in air and dissolve and displace hydrogen in the presence of dilute acids. When slightly above room temperature, it can decompose water and release hydrogen. Due to its high purity and low impurities, electrolytic manganese metal has been successfully and widely used in various fields such as steel smelting, non ferrous metallurgy, electronic technology, chemical industry, environmental protection, food hygiene, welding electrode industry, aerospace industry, and so on.
