Refined Scandium Oxide is one of several oxides of rare earth elements and has a high melting point. It is an inorganic compound with the formula Sc₂O₃. It is used in the preparation of other scandium compounds as well as in high-temperature systems (because of its heat resistance and thermal shock), electronic ceramics, and glass composition (as a helper material).

Production

Scandium oxide is the primary form of refined scandium produced by the mining industry. Scandium-rich ores, such as thortveitite (Sc, Y)2(Si₂O₇) and kolbeckite ScPO₄·2H₂O are rare, however, trace amounts of scandium are present in many other minerals. Scandium oxide is therefore predominantly produced as a by-product from the extraction of other elements. The raw material for its production comes from the waste acid of titanium dioxide in our group, LB group, which is the 3rd largest titanium dioxide manufacturer in the world. 

At present, the production capacity of scandium oxide is about 30 tons based on current equipment. In addition to extracting scandium in Jiaozuo, Henan, we also plan to extract scandium in Yunnan. Last year, we have signed a cooperation agreement with the local government to obtain the land for industrial use. It is expected to start production at the end of 2024, and the production capacity will be expanded to 70 tons by then. We believe that in the near future, with the expansion of our production capacity and continuous innovation of technology, the cost will become lower and lower, further supporting the development of downstream industries such as solid fuel cells.

A refined scandium oxide is a primary form of high-purity Sc₂O₃, its production is much larger than high-purity scandium oxide (4N/5N/5N5) powder, price is lower accordingly.
