There are two different production methods for it, distillation method and reduction method. The distilled scandium get better quality than the reduced one. Production

Scandium metal can be prepared by reducing the fluoride with calcium metal. It can also be prepared by electrolysing molten potassium, lithium and scandium chlorides, using electrodes of tungsten wire and molten zinc.

To produce distilled scandium metal, the oxide is converted to scandium fluoride and then reduced with metallic calcium and then distilled.
